Common questions

Does a pool builder need a state licence in Florida?

Yes. Constructing, repairing or servicing pools and spas is a licensed trade under Chapter 489, Florida Statutes. Florida defines commercial pool/spa, residential pool/spa and swimming pool/spa servicing contractors. Confirm with DBPR that the licence class on your contract covers the work.

What is the difference between CPC and RP?

CPC is a Certified Pool/Spa Contractor, who passed the state exam and may contract anywhere in Florida. RP is a Registered Pool/Spa Contractor, who qualified locally and may contract only in the jurisdictions where the registration is valid.

How much can a Florida pool contractor ask for as a deposit?

Florida does not set a flat deposit cap, but section 489.126 adds duties when a contractor takes more than 10 percent of the price on a residential job: apply for permits within 30 days and start work within 90 days after permits issue, unless there is just cause or you agree in writing to longer periods. Tie payments to finished stages.

Does a new Florida pool have to have a fence?

New residential pools need at least one of five safety features under Chapter 515: a barrier (at least 4 feet high), an approved safety cover, exit alarms on doors and windows opening to the pool, self-closing self-latching doors, or a pool alarm. Your building department decides what passes inspection.

Does this list show every complaint against a contractor?

No. It shows only final Construction Industry Licensing Board discipline published since fiscal year 2021-22. Open complaints and older actions are not in the files. Check DBPR directly for the full record.

My contractor's licence is not listed here. Is it invalid?

Not necessarily. We list only current and active CPC and RP licences with a Florida address. Servicing licences, general contractors who subcontract pools and out-of-state addresses are not covered. Check the number on DBPR.
